As Davethulu mentioned, the wages marketed for certain positions of manual labor don't properly compensate for the work put in. Many of those jobs aren't just back breaking, they're devastating to your health long term. There are documented cases of young boys working the fields and developing back pain/injuries in their teens.

This is the same tired bullshit - Americans are lazy because they won't just take a job. If it comes down to me working my f**k ass off for $11 an hour and risking my overall health as well as future marketability in higher paying sectors of the economy you better f**k believe I'm gonna opt out of that shit. If I'm a machinist and I'm offered a job in Fremont at $18 an hour in the bay area I can afford f**k all for home and commute.

Everybody talks about skilled jobs going unfilled but it's mostly bullshit because employers still aren't offering to pay what it costs to live in certain regions. That's why there's a mismatch.

Ultimately, American's would have to be more desperate to take the jobs offered for those low low wages. That's not a lazy calculation, that's a smart one.

Heard a comedian do this bit, but (like with most jokes) it's got a lot of truth in it.

Next time you pull up to McDonalds and you hear, "Wecome to Madonas, can I hep joo?", just remember that this was the absolute BEST candidate for the job out of everyone that applied.

Think about that for a second. Do you really think that the manager at a McDonalds is going to turn down some US citizen (high school kid, etc.) who can speak perfect English and has reasonably good people skills, for someone that can barely speak English? When he knows that he's going to pay both of them the exact same wages?
