I could be wrong, but I think Trump has hit the top of his arch already, and has expended so much of his think-skinned effort dealing with his own party. While Bernie gave Hillary a fight, she doesn't appear to have expended much effort deflecting it and is now ready for the real fight. She's a seasoned campaigner and knows how to pace her effort, where Trump is the dude who sprints the first few miles of a marathon just so he can be in first.[/quote]

Some of those numbers are a little outdated, but the general point is correct. I think he would need something like 70%+ of the white male vote to be in contention.

There's a rush (though a mostly subtle one) by establishment types to disassociate from Trump while hedging their bets and offering enough support to stay in his good graces in case he sticks around. This won't work because history, to the average Joe, doesn't pick up these subtleties. You will be viewed in history as either a Trump supporter or a Trump opponent, and judged accordingly (regardless of whether you followed Mitch's route - "Well, he doesn't know shit but let's vote for him anyway").

There's a chance that, if he's elected, he would be tempered by the responsibility of the office and restricted by the anti-Trump coalition (i.e., almost all Dems depending on the issue plus almost certainly enough Republicans to create a supermajority) that would form immediately after he takes office. But who knows. I think it's more likely he'd be an unmitigated disaster so trump supporters will be viewed negatively.

McCain has disappointed me. I've had a lot of respect for him since he shut down a supporter for suggesting that President Obama was a Muslim. He should be speaking out against Trump now and in my opinion risks his legacy by failing to do so.

Romney is a standup dude and proved it.

Graham, for all his faults (including blatant partisan attacks with no basis), is earning a lot of respect from me on his outspoken opposition.
