I've reflected on this and have to say I see Trump's point. Let's play this whole thing out, say Trump never takes Turkeyman's call. What's US policy on the Kurds? Have we committed ourselves to allying with the Kurds, and a potential Kurdish state, going forward? What are the long term implications of this alliance - which will obviously pose huge issues with "NATO ally" turkey and "ally" Iraq.
What we did was shameful and cowardly - but retreat always is. That doesn't mean retreat is WRONG, sometimes its necessary. What are our goals and intentions with respect to the Kurds and Syria generally? I would say the only real consensus is we want nothing to do with the region and won't want to spend anymore blood and treasure there. The only way to do that is by retreat - throw the man next to you under the bus, grab your britches, and haul ass out of there.
It's easy to say we meddle in the middle east, are overly involved, quagmire etc. Well that happens because we keep finding things in the region we absolutely must fight about - ISIS, the US must be world policeman and destroy. Kurds? The US must be policeman and protect.Iran, Syria, Saudi, Israel. We pretend we have no interest in the region worth fighting over, and then every issue that crops up we want to fight over. Takes a true blue kitty like trump to see the light - screw them all, we're coming home. Now Trump has been brainwashed by the usual suspects - the israel lobby and the f**k saudis - so he isn't perfect, but this is a step in the right direction. We either stand and fight for the Kurds going forward, or we cut out losses and bail from the entire fiasco now. Nothing personal against the Kurds, love you TY for ISIS fighting, but we aren't going to get bogged down in the region for another decade fighting for you guys.
America has its own interests. Sometimes they are ugly and shameful, but they are our interests.
DON'T BE A TOUGH GUY. DON'T BE A FOOL! I WILL CALL YOU LATER.
