There are plenty of rational, religious people that see marriage as a religious arrangement and less of a civic arrangement. Religious codes of morality are different (and typically stricter) than the guidelines set out in the laws.

I think gays should be able to marry and that it should be at the Church's/ pastors discretion whether to allow them. I think it would be terrible if priests/ pastors were forced to marry homosexuals.

except it isn't. some waiter makes a rude comment to the wrong minority and suddenly twitter, tumblr, facebook, CNN, MSNBC, FOX, huffington post, buzzfeed, reddit, et al are SHRIEKING about how terrible that waiter was.

what a mean guy! horrible! he totally said what he said because of the race of the patron! he must have, tumblr said so!

and now this man is fired, this company has weathered a week of absolute liberal insanity, and the only person harmed is the waiter. shit, the internet hate machine has made companies preemptively fire employees now. the fear that someone will start some twitter campaign because one person in a world of 7 billion is an asshole is so entrenched,

it's not juvenile, it's a serious issue of alienation in modern society. technology is stripping away privacy to the point where your own opinions, said in private or among a small group, are one tweet away from turning you into hitler.
