In recent times at least, it's been the American right who associate with anti-intellectualism and the idea that simple means better, so Shaman isn't entirely wrong. The right celebrates the idea that complex issues are solved by "common sense" and labels legislation as inherently bad because it' long. I believe it was Herman Cain who got huge applauses at GOP primaries for saying that every bill should fit on a single sheet of paper. This is really rooted in populism, but the right has channeled it the most in recent times.
On the other hand, while academics and other such nerds are associated more with the left, most liberal ideas need to be simplified for their base as well.
