This is a truly ridiculous argument.
Of course the "edge cases" are built in. That is the entire point of statistics, for Christ's sake.
Me: "Driving a car makes you far more likely to have an accidental death."
You: "No, just car accidents make that more likely."
Me: "...Yes, but you can't have a car accident without driving a car."
You: "Edge case."
