If we stopped doing everything that made us less safe, there would be no reason to keep living.

I agree. But that doesn't rationalize people who buy a gun thinking you're protecting yourself (like Menson), when you are actually making yourself less safe.
And if you buy a gun and keep it in your home with your children you are also making your family less safe just so you can have a fun toy. Which is obviously wildly irresponsible.

Of course the "edge cases" are built in. That is the entire point of statistics, for Christ's sake.
