still not finalized data -- roughly 92% of votes have been counted and at one point today CNN projected trump to be the winner of the popular vote but they've walked that back (probably from protesters). so 2016 may change.
anyway.
i added up data i found from wikipedia and
http://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/data/turnout.php and some public domain stuff. and i came up with the above.in terms of percentage of eligible voters, it's been pretty shit since LBJ/Kennedy. the only blip was Perot... but that took away from Reps more than dems really. and you can kind of see that trendline with the dems
once we get into this century it picks up. 2004 had a lot of votes -- there was a war on, you know. 2008 had even more, but still not at the levels of Ike, Kennedy, and LBJ.
but my oh my what do you see for 2016? oh my, what's this? it's almost the same porportion as obama in 2008, and more than obama in 2012? but i thought people stayed home! you mean... you mean... they voted 3rd party?!?!?!
