I think that we need the alternative institutions in order to start talking about big infrastructure investments again, probably. I mean the issue is that our institutions are broken, so as you said, throwing more money to those institutions isn't going to fix anything. But there are common sense projects that need to be done, that will require government, or something like it. For instance, road maintenance and internet access and clean drinking water, etc. We all need these things and it's a shame we can't do them right because we're stuck with the sort of government we currently have. These are projects which objectively help everyone, but the way things are done is so wasteful and stupid that we end up spending our time bickering about food stamps and gay marriage and Weiner's weiner.
I personally believe health care and education should also be considered a project of the same caliber, but the point is that my feelings and most of everyones feelings don't matter, and have no impact on how things are done. That needs to be addressed first.
So, alternative institutions first, and when we have something to organize around that isn't retarded, we can start making these kind of decisions again.
