They've made my PTSD manageable and I haven't dealt with any side effects. It's not going to go that way for everyone but that's been my experience.
For my specific case I could have gone on indefinitely without taking SSRIs but I would of been miserable regardless of my circumstances most of the time. When I started on one I had a 4.0 in college, a decent paying part time job, a steady relationship, apartment, ect. BUT no matter how well things were I felt like garbage most of the time. I was just able to continue going through the motions necessary to succeed regardless of how I felt because I held the belief that once I achieved the next level of "success" as defined by me THEN I would feel good. I eventually realized that no matter how well I did it was never going to change my mental situation. Went through a civilian doctor first, then the VA, etc etc. 2nd week on an SSRI my baseline feeling went from "holy shit this is awful, but must continue climbing ladder to not feel like this" to "meh, another day." Which was pretty excellent. Been taking them ever since.
My advice about SSRIs is they're worth a try and if they work for you it can be a huge difference.
I have never been mad online.
