this is the kind of stuff that tracks with people.
my father's side of the family is from virginia, mn, the queen city of the north, the center of the iron range. aurora -- the town in the article which has lost it's only grocery store because of the closure of the taconite mine -- is a bit east of it. i love the iron range. it's all blue collar up there almost exclusively. when my father met my mother she was delighted to know both their fathers were engineers...
"mine's a chemical engineer. and yours?"
"locomotive."
but when the damn chinese are flooding the market with steel, putting thousands out of work, and thousands more in the economy that is centered around supporting these folk, well, people get angry. and they have found their voice in donald trump. my father's father, supporting trump wouldn't be that hard for a man like him. he wasn't racist, he didn't hate anybody. he just cared about the people around him, the jobs that he would see leaving. note that the north part of the state make up the Labor in the "Democratic Farmer Labor" alliance in MN. it's why MN is always "blue". it's why Bernie Sanders is for protectionism. it's also why they will jump for trump
