I think the internet forum is an excellent way to stay informed about current events because you get to read a varied group of news stories of particular interest, so it's a pretty good news aggregator. And a story pretty much gets run through a crucible of discussion so be the end of the thread you have a pretty good insight into the various aspects of the issue brought forth by the thread.
It tends to reduce the spin applied by the various commercial news outlets.
