They don't allow the media to film it live because obviously a suspect could turn on the TV and get tipped off to what the cops are doing.

A private citizen taping something though isn't going to be able to broadcast that on TV.

Yeah but the chances of that happening are... slim compared to TV. Where would he even know to look?

I like the open court idea but somehow me thinks the gov't would go ahead and tell Apple to pull the plug and worry getting the "order" later. Ya know?

I'd say the bottom line is that the threat of abuse by the government far outweighs the concern over the activity in the first place.

Bingo.

It reminded me of Iran (which would have been a better analogy) during the Cedar Revolution--they shut down the media so that wasn't getting anything out and when they realized people were using things like Twitter and other social media (and lots of camera phones) they shut that down too.

We wouldn't have seen 80% of what went on were it not for people with their phones.

Exactly: the press is already under heel, so now do the same with the public. That never ends up well.
