Yeah the districting is what f*cks over third parties. If we had a system in which instant-runoff voting was used to elect representatives out of one big pool there would be much more diversity in who would get elected. It would put rural communities at a huge disadvantage however as everyone would be campaigning for the large population centers.

How much press do you think a democrat or republican running with 11% gets? You don't seem to understand how the press works, which is unsurprising since as soon as Stewart is done talking you say "he told me the truth! Why question it?"

The press wants people to read/watch their shit. They can cover Ron Paul and your 11% green candidate but that only appeals to a small sliver of the public, and they're too busy watching comedians give commentary to buy a newspaper. Covering candidates who actually have the infrastructure and broad appeal to win an election will be interesting to far more consumers of news.

The reason third party candidates tend to get labeled as fringe or whatever isn't because of some vast media conspiracy, but because they tend to say fringe things and have fringe opinions, ostensibly to set themselves apart.

Imagine Ron Paul running...only he never said the politically impossible shit, but stuck with the core ideas that most people can get excited about? The trouble was that for every two smart things he said, he said a third thing that made him seem completely disconnected from reality, and instead living in a world of "Gee wouldn't it be nice."

That's the problem the third party candidates have...they can't seem to keep the admirable but also "not a snowball's chance in hell" stuff separate from the practical.
