at the very least christianity has a lot of reasons why it was f**k up in the 12th-17th century. you had almost three centuries of brutal persecution from the romans (shit that would make ISIS envious), followed by the collapse of the christian roman empire in the west to pagans. not long after you had a new religion, islam, sweep christianity out of the holy land, crush the christian empire of the east, raid the hell out of the mediterannean, and conquer most of spain. a century or two after that you had insane bearded men from the north sailing in on dragon ships, high on magic mushrooms, raping nuns and killing monks and burning down monasteries all along the north sea. then you had the crusades, which failed, the great schism, which broke the church in half, the f**k mongols invading up to the borders of modern poland and to top off that shit sundae you had one of the worst plagues in history take out a third to a half of christendom's population. then to finish off this long list of great things you had the rise of the ottomans, the fall of the roman empire, the sacking of constantinople, and the seemingly invincible ottoman muslim army at the gates of vienna.
given that context i'm not surprised christians were insecure for a few centuries.
