Since this has migrated a bit, let me tell you about a taxi driver in Italy. Nice guy. We tried speaking to him in Italian, but ended up switching to English. We were gushing about how beautiful his country was, and all that. I commented that it was amazing that the church we were just in was built before Columbus discovered America.
He nodded, and said, "Yes. But, America is so vibrant. You are so young, yet look what you have accomplished! We have lots of old history, but no one wants to change anything . . . do anything new. America is where things happen."
I reflected that that used to be VERY true. And, still is to come degree. But not like it used to be. However, I don't think it's terrible. Had my inlaws stayed in Cuba, my father would have been a soldier and my mother-in-law a seamstress. And, my wife and SIL would likely be the same. However, both my wife and SIL have advanced degrees and are very successful businesswomen. I don't know if the story would be the same if they were from any other country, though.
