That seems like a pretty strange view of sexism to me, Dharma. The pigs I know aren't scared of women. They don't talk about hitting in self-defense. They say stuff like "keeping her in line," they treat them almost like wards, very protectively hostile. They are generally violent people, and they use their willingness to hurt to gain submission from their spouse, who is often manipulated into thinking they deserve it. It has nothing to do with cultural affirmation - that is why they go out of their way to intimidate their spouse into keeping it quiet, why it takes a really keen observer to identify the patterns of abuse.
It's as if your conception of spousal abusers is derived entirely from your ideology.
There is no widespread, socially acceptable rape culture. Pockets of it to be sure, but rape has always been viewed as unacceptable by larger society, even for sexist reasons. I guess this is the part where you say that we just aren't capable of understanding.
