at least 27 dead in this friday's terror attacks in Mali. luxury hotel taken over by a group called Al Mourabitoun, who stormed the hotel shouting "allah akbar". they went room by room killing those people who could not recite verses of the koran

Here's an argument I used to make all the time. In fighting the Cold War--i.e., in fighting communism--how would you do that without paying attention to Moscow?

Yet here we are at least 14 years and counting fighting Wahhabist Sunni Muslims and we ignore Saudi Arabia. And Pakistan. And we wonder why it's all over the world.

Another thing to consider is the nature of the schism within Middle Eastern countries. Sunni v. Shiite. Two different interpretations of Islam, with group identification being the single most important factor determining where your loyalties lie politically - more than political ideology, more than nationality, more even then belonging to the same overarching religion.

It is simply delusional to not recognize the huge role Islam has in these conflicts. Saracen is simply wrong, period.
