He was running away.
When the officer pursued, he turned and tried to tase the officer.
The shooting was undoubtedly justifiable. It is crystal clear throughout that his rights were not being violated. And there is no question he posed a real threat to the officer.
As police officers are notorious liars, who have no qualms whatsoever about making things up in order to proceed with an arrest, the initial skepticism was warranted. The video evidence, however, is pretty compelling and will no doubt result in the officer being cleared of any charges.
More important than the reaction of Twitter folk to this specific incident is the instinctual cynicism towards police actions over minor things like a guy passed out in a Wendy's.
I for one am sincerely glad that people are finally questioning if law enforcement should aspire to a higher standard than simply arresting people. Finally asking if there is a less damaging path that can be taken, if the circumstances call for it. Finally questioning the utility of DUI laws that treat folks like felons. I am also glad that cops are no longer believed, and that more evidence is required.
