Actually Virginia does forbid primary losers from running in the general.
And by the same logic, you pay Supreme Court justices salaries, so do you think you should get to vote for them too?

We the taxpayers also pay for the salary of every staffer. Let's elect them all the way down to the receptionist in every government office.

Direct election of judges is a horrible idea. You get populists rather than qualified legal proffessionals. In some of the states that have direct election you don't even need a law degree to become a judge ...
