America is the image of wasted potential. Massive amounts of natural resources, technological innovation, the brightest minds in the world and a productive cultural lineage... and the end result is a slowly expanding, but ever more dilapidated suburb full of asphalt, strip malls and dollar stores filled with SUVs blasting dubstep from sea to shining sea.

A pretty much complete spiritual, cultural and aesthetic wasteland.

The point is that there is no such thing as "american ingenuity". We played our part in human development by allowing ideas to blend early on without abstract cultural barriers interfering with the development of those ideas. Now every developed nation on earth allows those ideas to develop, and a lot of them do it a f**k ton better than we do.

The comments by HW are just media fodder... he's not a smart man, his comments are not deep, and there is no backstory to what he is trying to say. He's the same as when he left office.

The implication of the statement is more jarring once you consider the "never" portion of it. It lacks humility and echoes the mindsets of many during our darkest hours (Japanese Internment camps, Women's suffrage, Civil Rights Movement, Iran Contra Affair, etc). It perfectly represents what the GOP represented under Bush: Jingoism.

They were devoid of patriots at that point.
