Sigmund Freud defined four parts of a psyche; the id, the ego, the superego and the stratego. The Stratego being the highest form of morality and scientific thinking.
If guns are not outlawed, the in-laws will have guns.

Having a gun makes me feel safer.
It's also the reason why I always fly with a bomb on me. The chance that there's a bomb on a plane is small, but the chance that there are two bombs?, even smaller. I feel safe.

My bet is most crimes committed using a gun, the gun is not owned leagally. (mine B legal). Besides, if/when you get to my age, its just easier to pull the trigger on a door kickerinner, robber, or whatever, then it is to engage in fisticuffs, or other assorted Neanderthal brow beating. 
The hardest part of doing nothing is knowing when your done.
