Yeah to both of your poitns, JG and Winchester, eating healthy makes staying a reasonable weight easier becuas eof tertiary factors like controlling cravings, controlling spikes in blood sugar levels, etc.
But the fudnamental bottom line is that to weigh less you should eat (net of calories burned) less. That's part of the reason that nutrition professor lost a ton of weight just eating twinkies.
It's a simple concept but very difficult to carry out. And eating healthy will absolutely make it easier because it makes you feel more full and prevents the "carb crashes" that make gorging so tempting.
