I'm going to be honest and say each side is ignorant on the issue, which basically makes it a mute point. For every person who brings a gun to a school, hospital etc there is always someone using a weapon to defend themselves in their home, on the street or public places. Everytime this argument comes into play we have those on one side who completely denies weapons are used for protection in circumstances around the country, we also have those who will deny the weapon in the hand of the individual is not the leading cause for shootings in the first place. Clearly this won't go anywhere when your unwilling to recognize the situation at hand.
There is two realities we have to face here, citizens regardless of location, status or income will at one point have to defend themselves by force. Its going to happen, and unless we enjoy bringing knives to gunfights the solutions in tens of millions of scenarios whether its defending your home, your farm, your personal property or family then a weapon should be sufficient enough. I think many of us have never been in a scenario where a weapon would of protected us from criminals and I pray to god none of us do, but for those of us who know people who have experienced this, then weapons do protect people. We don't have the technology or speed to Minority Report our police into every persons home when a robbery or criminal act is happening. I mean, why is it the same people who complain that someone can't decide what hospital to go when they have gone into cardiac arrest but can't accept the fact that someone can't call 911 when they are being attacked? We have to accept reality for what it is, people do horrible things and weapons can protect them.
The second reality is that weapons are abused. We have seen children killed, senators/presidents shot for years now. There is a real chance that horrible people will obtain a weapon and use it to harm others. This isn't a new concept, everyone knows this. This in turn, should have governments obtain weapons records and place certain rules for having guns for when an individual decides to use it illegally. We also shouldn't allow your everyday person to simply go and buy an assault rifle either, most are not trained killers and sometimes I wonder if we should allow people to pass tests just like driving. There are good things to certain rules in regards to weapons that can't be ignored.
So where is the happy medium? Its where we are right now. Certain states and federal laws require registrations of weapons which has a paper trail to each gun used. We also prevent convicted felons of obtaining a weapon given their record of abuse of the law. Individuals are allowed to purchase or sell weapons as they please in a private market as they should be. Americans are allowed to defend their homes and based off democratic voting systems they are allowed to open carry if their city or state says they have the right to defend themselves in public.
Now we move on to why in the sam hell would anyone want a weapon? Well, I already explained we know why people have weapons. Horrible people loving ruining the days and lives of good law abiding citizens. But we also need to recognize there is a legitimate reason to have a weapon outside of personal protection. I'm not sure if any of you paid as much attention during the Boston Marathon Bombers hunt, but the city of Boston, FBI and other tactical groups amassed a massive amount of firepower in a centralized area quickly. They had APC's camo, assault rifle toting combat trained officers and millions of dollars of equipment to find 2 people. Now, as far as I know, there is going to be a revolution in this country at some point. Maybe in 10 years, 40 years etc. Its going to happen, and it might even be violent. We are seeing an evolution into a serious police state, of which governments across the country can enforce any ridiculous law they want. Local police forces are purchasing thousands to millions of dollars of equipment to prevent any type of resistance. Now, we in America don't believe in violent protest anymore, but we also can't even protest without filling out requests for permission to picket outside. We are being spied on by our government, our government has a 7% approval rating, despite massive hate towards bailouts we were forced to participate, our government just forced us to buy a product against our will and yet we want to take the very item away that can be used collectively to change all of it. Why we would want to do that is beyond me.
My two cents, just quit being pricks about guns and legimiately debate. I went through about 4 pages of people here who instead of debating simply belittle the opposition and crown themselves king. There is a legitimate debate towards weapons, its just whether or not you believe you need a gun or not. I can't change your mind if you don't want a single person to have a weapon, maybe a burglar will do that for you.
