Spacemonkey is right the media got tons of content/airtime out of this, which is what they want. They live for shit like this, and wars.
They don't give a toss about reporting the facts, just offering play-by-play. Another prime, awful example was the hysteria during the Boston Bombers shootout/chase.

About the only thing left to do is place bets on how long the riots/looting will last. My guess is through the holiday, or till their ain't nothing left to burn.
