The purpose of government in the first place under the US scheme is to protect the rights of the individual. Collective rights are used to express the stuff like the right to own slaves etc. This of course is something imposed by class privilege and is not part of the law in the US. The fact that ignorant people have attacked the first state charter that guarantees individual rights for it's citizens almost from the beginning doesn't any way mean that your own illegitimate viewpoint is somehow magically rendered legitimate. The concept of collective rights is no where to be found in any of the reasoning behind the formation of the US constitution.
