Well, then what's your point? That in order for it to matter we need to wait for a known star to come out? What if they're not gay? I just don't understand your/86' argument.
Does his lack of fame degrade the importance of the event? Should he have reflected on his own perception of his popularity and decided against it because of that?
Thedude's point isn't that this is HUGE because it's a member of a professional sports league, we all openly acknowledge that this shouldn't be big news. But it is...because bigotry still exists on a scale that's roughly in line with past social injustices. I would closely mirror this with the illegality of a white woman marrying a black man of not long ago in the great liberal utopia of California.
Gays don't have the same rights and are largely still seen on unequal terms by laws of multiple stats and through DOMA.
Given this contextualization of the moment, it's hard to see how this isn't a big deal.
