Making contacts is specifically why I took the waitress job at the place I work now. The choice was between this job and another in which I would have been working alone. The people who eat there mostly work in and around the industry I'm looking to break into and I'm already getting leads and recommendations. After my summer classes, I'll be able to take some temp jobs and will be focusing on those industries too.
Moving back here after 8 years really did hamper my prospects due to losing contact with folks around town and my prospects have improved immensely just because I've been meeting and getting to know the folks who can help get me in the door.
