Jeez - as I've said before, you're not going to get anywhere with suggestions like "melt down all guns" or "move gun owners to 2-3 states". Conversely, I also don't think that "no background checks" is an answer.
As usual, the solution lies somewhere in the middle. Strengthen background checks. Require proof of purchase/ownership of a gun locker before you purchase a gun.
Probably the most effective, yet most controversial of the "realistic" solutions would be to require all new guns have fingerprint identification technology built into them, so they can only be fired by the owner.
Baring that last suggestion passing, I can't think of a single way to prevent people from stealing legally-owned guns and using them for bad purposes.

You don't need to ban all guns.
You need to ban handguns.
Long guns aren't really the issue here. Sure they are used from time to time but the vast majority of all gun homicides are committed with handguns. Start there.
