Hmmmm I always thought of GoT as being closer to dark ages than Renaissance but it's also in a fictional universe so I assume there are elements of many eras at play.

Yeah but the shows quality shouldn't be judged off the expectations from the book. It should be able to stand on its own and I think most people going in without book expectations are pleased with the visuals.
