I think that political messaging is really, really interesting these days. Take a look at this image that has been making the rounds of Conservative Party fan pages on social media:
You look at it, and visually, the graphic is very amateurish. Yet it is actually a really highly sophisticated piece of messaging. The text is
completely accurate. Justin Trudeau does believe that foreign fighters should be able to keep their passports. He does want them to return to Canada. What is left unsaid is actually the most important bit. A person might easily conclude that he thinks they should be able to go free, or that he doesn't want to do anything about them. In reality, he wants them to come back to Canada and face trial, which is apparently an archaic practice these days. This is actually a fairly principled and reasonable stance on Trudeau's part, one that would speak to alot of Conservative types concerned about big government. Yet simply by stating the truth with certain omissions, it has been completely turned around.
All political campaigns are highly organized, totally artificial media spectacles. Nothing more, nothing less. To complain about any one particular usage misses the point entirely.
