The problem I see from conservatives here is that their solutions are things like "work harder than everyone else" and "develop skills to distinguish yourself from the pack". While this is great personal advice, it's not a legitimate public policy to promote prosperity and social mobility. Categorically, the masses cannot "work harder than everyone else". Extraordinary individuals have the ability to rise to the top, but a great society affords average people the ability to still have a decent standard of living, and I've heard no solutions for this here.

Of course, they can't when they have liberals like yourself willing to give them a pass. Why work hard? Why make good decisions? Someone else will take care of you. Drop out of school, we'll demand a living wage. Have a few kids, we'll give you welfare and the EITC.[/quote]
Everyone can work hard, but everyone can't work harder than everyone else. It's a relative concept, not an absolute one.

Yeah lol, everybody working harder than everybody else is nonsense. I think people should try ad better themselves. But first we have to create a society that encourages people to do that, and gives them the opportunity.

the swiss don't have a minimum wage but most people make more than americans. their average wage is the 3rd highest in europe, behind lichtenstien and monaco, and about 7k more/year than americans. but they don't even have a minimum wage!!!! how could this be???!?!?!?!?!?!?! this past years swiss voters rejected a "living wage" to be instituted. how much is needed to "live" in switzerland? $25/hr.


the problem here in america is cheap labor from mexico. if you're gonna import cheap labor then don't wonder why labor is so cheap
