I guess that my stance, somewhat irregardless of the numbers is this:
I have kids and I know that kids and guns don't mix. I cannot figure out a way to eliminate the possibility of them finding and shooting the gun. I can reduce it, but not eliminate it. On the other hand, I DO like the prospect of having a gun in the house for protection (had them before kids). But, the chances of me learning about the presence of a burglar, being able to run to another room to get the gun, unlock the gun, then load the gun - all before the burglar finds me, is slim. Heck, I sleep through hurricanes - a silent burglar is going to slit my throat mid-snore!
Therefore, I "choose" to not have a gun in my house. But, especially given that I lived through Katrina, I'm REALLLLLLY glad that my neighbor has them!
