why? because the government and banks can't rape people any longer? or because they'd rather go out of business and destroy society rather than make lower profit margins?

every single value we give anything as a society is arbitrary. that's not an argument not to do something generally. so cap interest rates at something low, and abolish them for student loans. it's in our best interest to do it.

If we enter a mad max post apocalyptic era, having a closet full of gold will probably be dead weight. It may take half just to trade for some water, assuming whoever has the water wants to trade in the first place.
