I'm referencing value to society as a whole, not to you as an individual (though you would be wise to observe the statistics that indicate that owning a gun makes you more likely to suffer harm than not owing a gun. Believing you are the exception is dangerous. The special snowflake syndrome).

I don't own a car. Guilt free. But cars are a valuable part of society and ownership thereof should be encouraged. Guns are the opposite. Even if I owned a car I would not feel guilty for this reason.
