This is a variation on a quote attributed (also falsely) to some politician in Texas: "If English was good enough for Jesus, it's good enough for all of us".
Anyway Bachmann is more looney than stupid. She also catapulted into the spotlight very quickly and totally wasn't ready for it, then she embraced the niche crowd who liked what they saw rather than working to polish her image for broader appeal. Actually everything she's done since going on Hardball and suggesting we bring back McCarthyism has been pretty opportunistic. Probably not as dumb as people think.
