I'm no fan of the GOP's extreme intransigence when it comes to the President, but if I was a general I may prefer to resign rather than lead another campaign of military intervention in the Middle East. It's like we're not even pretending to consider long (or even medium) term consequences of our foreign policy anymore.

Random airstrikes are not on a par with Aghanistan/Iraq-type full-on invasions.

You're right about the awful sanctions which did nothing but kill Iraqis, but that wasn't military in nature.

But to your point: perhaps we could say the U.S. has been at war or ready to go to war with the entire region because of its overwhelming dependency on oil, and yes that goes back decades. We'd never be fooling around/intervening there if it weren't for it.

Which is why we're willing to watch atrocities in places like Rwanda or Darfur--sorry guys, you don't have oil!

Obama downplayed the threat coming out of Syria. I'm sure he didn't want to get sucked back into Iraq. I detest the guy's politics, but blaming him for the cluster f**k that Bush helped create is pointless. Obama didn't start the chaos in Syria, or make the wackado jihadist fill the void.

Don't get me wrong, bombing another country and saying you're not committing a act of war is pretty idiotic. Saying you're going to arm "moderates" in Syria is pretty stupid to, there are no moderates.
