I think we should have a dual system in which local government has more responsibilities and remains popularly elected, with input from cooperatives and workers' councils. Strategic decisions such as foreign policy and overall redistribution of wealth within the country should be left to an administratively-chosen elite group of policy makers trained in gladiatorial combat and embodying classical values of virtue. President determined by death match. Basically the current system without the mass media spectacle of voting for colorless senators or congressmen.

So here's my other question: if Brownback wins, does he change course or does he just keep driving the state into the ditch? Just the fact that he's in a dead heat for re-election after his abysmal failure tells me he has no incentive to change a thing.

That's really something if it happens: people so motivated by something else in politics that they'll willingly support a guy who's driving their state over a cliff.

I totally agree with you, but SCOTUS has argued that money = "speech" so outlawing this would allegedly violate the First Amendment.

Then again, SCOTUS merely interprets laws while Congress writes them, so...

1. The Supreme Court never said that money = speech so quit that straw man already. They said you can use your money to get out your message.

2. Giving gifts directly to officials is not the same thing as spending money on a political campaign. I'm not an expert on the laws here but I think personal gifts are pretty heavily restricted.
