i question the need for government to do this. is it lacking in some areas? certainly. is it lacking in most areas? no. in the end this is a local problem, and needs local solutions.
i think exploited really f**k this thread up and made it really easy for me to pick his whole argument apart. in the end he's trying to get everyone to buy into this idea that we should keep him employed.
internet is already treated as a public utility. as such it is given government created monopolies in order to "work" (i dissagree that such monopolies are necessary, but the govt disagrees). the only real competition comes from different ways of getting internet to the consumer. fiber, cable, cell, and dsl. that's basically it, and in any given area there probably isn't going to be two providing the same service with the major exception of cell. and what is that difference? cell phones are not locked to the land.
5G cell is 1-10 gig/sec. i think governments can help facilitate this, they can use eminent domain to help out companies, because in the end they want the people to have those Gs. problems with 5G include a spectrum shortage. we need to start killing off older tech. that's something government does need to be involved in. but providing the coverage itself? no.
the US has something like 40%+ 4G penetration at this point. western europe comes a close second at 7.5% penetration. and yet we're derided as being behind the times, lol. with 5G which we will roll out before everybody else and with great zeal we'll have 1-10Gig connections while being driven by our robot cars. f**k wires
