I try to be anti-zoning, but then I think about someone buying up all the land around me and opening a pig farm. It would not only force me to move, all the neighborhoods nearby would likely need to move. Since these neighborhoods are the ones putting the most taxes into the city, the city would be screwed.
Now, if you aren't talking about zoning entirely, but just about the size of the buildings used for the zone, I could get more on board. As long as there are rules about proper land-size, distances, construction, and access. I don't see a problem. Particularly in large cities. I'd be ok with them getting so dense that nobody can move and they have to resort to cannibalism to survive. As long as it is voluntary, people can live as terribly as they want. I'll stay out of the cities myself and be happy.
