CNN was musing if we should destroy the jefferson memorial for that reason ben. i suppose with it would be the destruction of the washington memorial of course, that horrible person. the statue of jackson in new orleans needs to go.

people owned slaves in antebellum united states. this isn't racist by the way: there are free blacks who owned slaves in antebellum united states. there were also free blacks. true, the worst whites ever got was indentured servitude, but just because somoene owned slaves, or fought for the confederacy doesn't mean they were racist or stood for racist ideals. for example Robert E Lee, a general in the confederacy who had a statute of him vandalized with BLACK LIVES MATTER on it the other day, was opposed to slavery. his wife and his in laws were the ones who owned arlington house and the slaves with it. even still, they educated their slaves and emancipated many of them and gave them land on their own estate as freedmen. lee freed all the slaves at arlington after his father in law died during the civil war, before the emancipation proclamation (as it happens, weeks before).

this is the shit i'm talking about. one f**k idiot kid does a terrible thing and we are actually discussing tearing down statues of important historical figures including the author of the declaration of independence. the f**k is this nonsense

If the south wants a symbol of southern pride, by all means create one, but don't cling to this symbol of southern shame. Whatever minuscule merit the "honor our tradition" argument had should have ended when the last confederate veteran died and went to hell many years ago.
