one of the more f**k up cases of this i've read about was the chechen wars where a group of russians was in a village that dagestani militants were converging on. everyone fled except about 8 guys who fought until they ran out of ammo. they surrendered under the promise of being treated fairly. then they were tortured and beheaded in a field. if their fellow soldiers had stayed there's no telling what might have happened, but chances are good the fight wouldn't have ended in mass beheading.
now multiply that by their entire army because there are literally dozens and dozens of stories similar to that one in their recent conflicts.
