To be fair, when we abolished slavery it was because we had just put down an attempted secession from the south. They started the war as a pre-emptive defense of slavery but the north wasn't planning to march on the south and liberate the slaves had the south not rebelled. It supports my point that even the "good guys" have to be pushed to actually do something good.

Yea, that's exactly my point. Once upon a time libs were willing to split the country and go to war in order to ensure a more free and equal Union. You? Someone interrupted a speech and you say shoot them down in the streets. You wouldn't be on the right side in the civil war, you would be the guy who is "against" slavery but would much rather continue on with it than do the hard and dirty work that the civil war required.
