My father used to work in the mining industry. They had a rule that no one was to work more than 60 hours as they became a liability. It didn't matter how you divided up the shifts, the stats for mistakes over 60 hours were exponential.
No one should be forced to work more than 50, but it can seem pretty unavoidable for those of us with certain types of jobs, but it is worth noting that you become increasingly ineffective over that rough 60 mark. No one wins, not even the employer.
