Actually you're right of course, paraphrasing a saying that I use often: "Whenever a system is in place that defies all common sense it's because somebody's making money off it."
What's so short-sighted about it is: if we were to pioneer and perfect non-fossil fuel technologies and become the world suppliers for them, these people would be even richer.
But as we know all too well the most powerful ideology in America is maintaining the status quo. It's like we can't think 15 minutes into the future.

Wait so in a world of globalized capitalism you don't consider economic policies and actions to be relevant to foreign policy? Doubly so for a country whose economy relies on commodity exports?
