I just don't see the courts handling this. Not after all the recent rulings.

It's not a matter of neutrality... It is just that the law is coming down hard on the side of the Second Amendment and the Supreme Court has a vested interest in maintaining credibility. Justices are hesitant to flip-flop because they don't want that happening to their rulings. Also because their decisions effect so much it is very expensive and destabilizing for them to ignore precedent.
