I feel like we've done a huge circle jerk here. Ethics and war don't mix. The only gauge worth considering is just how far a given war is from having any ethical concerns whatsoever.

"That's unethical!" He wept, as his women were enslaved and sons put to the sword. There are no ethics in war, it's simply to important. If you aren't willing to do anything and everything to win a war, then it's probably unethical of you to be involved in the first place.

There are ethics in war. You really don't need to go on rape campaigns, for instance. If your enemy wants to surrender, you respect the "white flag" and hear him out, rather than simply using it as an opportunity to massacre them. I'm sure I could go on, but I gotta get to work.

the purpose of the complex self organized system we know as "life" is to degrade any extant energy differentials which inhibit equilibrium

so pollute and waste all you want, it is your purpose in life. technologically advanced warfare is great because it serves this purpose admirably

ethics are a form of collective ideal, and thus are formed from the exact basis as religion or other belief systems etc. they will simply reflect the existential realities needed at that moment. if great numbers of individuals are in the way of this need our only "ethical" calculation will be in justifying their liquidation somehow
