The people who are joining ISIS in the west are disenfranchised and alienated individuals who feel like the society they are a part of has nothing to offer them, they are not unlike the columbine killers. Many likely have some sort of mental health disorder. Some of this is unfortunately unavoidable, there will always be crazy's. Some of this is because there are a multitude of factors creating a decline of social cohesion in the west and individuals are falling through the cracks.

There are plenty of downtrodden in the Arab world, and if jihadist make a small percent of muslims, too say every member is disinfrancized or the main motivation of jihadist joining ISIS ranks, is a pretty generalized statement.
