The problem isn't really Islam, but the fact that we attribute anything bad to Islam if the person doing it has any connection to the religion.
If a Muslim man takes up arm against Gaddafi in the name of freedom, we don't say that Islam is about freedom, we say that he loves Western values. But when that same man goes ape shit crazy, we point to the fact that he's a Muslim.
