How would the doctor know that she would die if not given the abortion?

Because the reason given wasn't "An abortion wouldn't help you" it was "Abortions are illegal in this country".

This is actually why I am pro-choice. Not because I believe abortions of convenience are ethical or moral, but because at the end of the day, a woman should always have control over her own body. I hate getting pulled into the "when does life begin" and "is a few cells a living child" debates, because in my view it really doesn't matter. A woman should be able to choose her own way forward in any health concern. If that leads to people choosing to "kill" the life they are fostering for trivial reasons, it is a small price to pay for those who may live by making a hard choice and having the options they need.
