Also, the gubmint can't incentivize its politically preferable outlets in the economy without invading the rights of people who just want to live for their own sake. Political favoritism at its most efficient.

Here are more good reasons for supporting the end of tax expenditures.
1. If a Congressman cannot put a loophole into the tax code, then donating ginormous sums to his campaign to do so becomes moot. There goes your need for campaign finance reform. And since he will be getting less cash from donors, the playing field just got more level and his current 97 percent chance of re-election just plummeted. So there goes your need for term limits.
You reform a broken system by removing those avenues which are wide open to temptation and corruption.
2. You cannot hide a tax increase when there are no tax expenditures.
3. No tax expenditures allows for much lower tax rates.

I've argued this in the past. I've said to get rid of all deductions for individuals except a few. Leave in:
1. deduction for child
2. deduction for state taxes (because they vary)
3. deduction for student loans
4. deduction for medical expenses
That's it. No more allowed ever. none for charity, mortgages, etc. Now just lower marginal rates to adjust.
